Hearst left MGM in 1934 after quarreling over the types of roles Davies was getting and went to Warner Bros., but stayed only a few years.
Davies' films there, including Page Miss Glory (1935), Hearts Divided, Cain and Mabel (both 1936), and Ever Since Eve (1937), were pleasant enough but did not make enough money to afford more investments in her films.
Hearst dissolved Cosmopolitan in 1937, and Davies retired to his several homes, including the lavish castle in San Simeon, where she was known as a gracious hostess to Hollywood royalty.

It will never be as old, however, as Cain and Mabel's plot, which combines two of the cinema's most familiar story formulas: 1) Hate Can Turn to Love; 2) The Way to a Man's Heart Is Through His Stomach.
Hate arises between Cain (Clark Gable) and Mabel (Marion Davies) when he, trying to sleep before fighting for the world's heavyweight title, is kept awake all night by her tap dancing in the room above.
Before the fadeout Cain goes berserk in the ring, Mabel goes berserk on the stage.

At-A-Glance Film Reviews: Cain and Mabel (1936)
A predictable but pleasant piece of fluff nostalgia, Cain and Mabel is the story of a dancer (Marion Davies) and a boxer (Clark Gable) who cross paths, don't like each other much, but then -- surprise -- end up falling in love.
What elevates this story a notch above other musical retreads of this story is its sly wit.
