BRAZZIL - News from Brazil - Sertaneja and Country Music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Mention música caipira to a cultured company in Brazil and be prepared for the snickering.
It is performed by a trio using acoustic instruments and singing in the regional dialect of the backlands, which is very different from the dialect spoken in Rio.
One of the great pleasures of Som da Terra (Sound of the Land) is discovering the rhythmic varieties employed in caipiras, many of which were inherited from the flamenco music of the Spanish colonies that neighbor Brazil.

The death of João Pacífico is a big loss for the country and for caipira music in particular.
Son of an ex-slave woman, he was born in 1909 on a farm in Cordeirópolis, a town in the interior of São Paulo state.
He started a tradition of caipira music, in which the singer would recite verses before starting to sing the song.

 Gilvan de Oliveira: Violão Caipira
Caipira is a life style that survived the times when the Portuguese immigrants and the local Indians met and adopted each other's culture.
Gilvan de Oliveira was born in the south of the state of Minas Gerais, Itaú.
Composed by caipira legends Rubinho do Vale and João Evangelista Rodrigues, this songs tells us right away what caipira is. Education continues with the original folklore song "Beira-Mar Novo," that was also recorded by Milton Nascimento on his most recent album Pietá in a very impressive way.

Brazil - Brazzil Magazine - How the Viola Got Hip in Brazil   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
And it is thus that these artists explain the growth of the public for the viola caipira: "The viola has a lot to say about the history of Brazil, about the imagination of the people; that is why it is coming back so strong", says the violeiro Ivan Vilela, from Itajubá in Minas Gerais.
The notion that transformations in the style and in the arrangements of the song, leading to a broader knowledge of the instrument, are inevitable is widespread.
A pioneer in the dissemination of música caipira, Cornélio Pires had to cover the costs of the first 78 rpm discs that he launched in 1929, with a repertoire from the interior of São Paulo, after Columbia turned him down, not believing that they could be commercially viable.

 VH1.com : Almir Sater : Biography
Almir Sater began unpretentiously in the '80s in a genre despised by mass media, the caipira (hillbilly) music, out of sheer passion.
Sater draws his style from a movement that began in the '60s by composers Paulo Simões and Geraldo Espíndola, among others, which blended the caipira tradition of Mato Grosso as represented in the national radio since the '30s by Délio & Delinha with American folk elements as proposed by Bob Dylan and other artists.
With Simões, he formed the Comitiva Esperança in 1984, which, for three months, traveled through the isolated region of the Pantanal with a TV team collecting testimonies and images of nature, music, and culture, resulting in a medium-subject film (released in 1985) and Sater's album Almir Sater Instrumental (Som da Gente, 1985).
