Poet - Laureate Ahmed shawki's Museum, originally named by the poet " Karmat Ibn Hani'e (Ibn Hani'e's vineyard), was the first of a series of museums to be yet renovated.
In an air of romantic serenity and calm, the house lay in the middle of a spacious and gorgeous garden, strewn with ever-green trees, the oldest of which is a willow with intertwined branches.
Conscious of his moral and social responsibility as a poet, shawki intentionally execluded from this collection many of his early poems which smacked of self- conceit and arrogance, which, he felt, would be more detrimental than beneficial to the rising generation.

Tamim al-Barghouti was born in Cairo to an Egyptian mother, Radwa Ashour, and the Palestinian journalist and poet Mourid al-Barghouti, born in Deir Ghassanah near Ramallah on the West Bank.

One of the highlights of the trip was the reading I and a group of poets from Egypt, Russia, China, South Korea, Romania and France gave at the Alexandria Centre of Arts.
We all chose one poem to read and sitting at the poet's desk we recited them to one another.

Of the many Corner nights I've put on, the word acts I've most enjoyed are Joe Cairo, Jon Wheeler, SP Howarth, Paddy's Uncensored Cabaret, "William Burroughs", Peggy Pegworth, the inimitable Jack Blackburn and the late, great Simon Monkhouse.
