Notable buildings in the town include Caistor Grammar School, founded in 1633, and Sessions House, built in 1662.

The population included within the 76 parishes of the Caistor Union at first grew and then declined; decline had set in as people migrated to the towns and emigrated to USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, before the formation of Grimsby Union in 1890, when 25 parishes were withdrawn from the Caistor Union.

From AD 200 the shores of eastern England were a target for frequent raids by barbarians from northern Europe.
The name `Caistor' was given to the then ruined Roman town by the Anglo- Saxon settlers, who had learned the Latin word for fort, `Castra'.
What happened to the Roman inhabitants of the town remains a mystery, but archaeological evidence suggests that the area surrounding the town remained a focus for smaller-scale settlement for several centuries.
