  Cajemé
Cajemé (Yaqui for 'he who does not drink'), born José Maria Leyva was a Yaqui leader who lived in the Mexican state of Sonora in the late 1800s.
In 1887 Cajemé was finally captured and shot to death by the Mexican Army.
Following this much of the Yaqui nation was enslaved and sent to work in the Yucatan peninsula, where many of them died by the hundreds.

Cajeme was the captain general but placed a popular council into the forefront as the major decision making body and agreed to abide by its consensus.
Cajeme made one last attempt to regain control but was defeated and was reduced to dividing his men into small bands and engaging troops in small skirmishes.
Cajeme again offered peace under the condition that government troops were withdrawn, but the reply of the military leader indicated that the Yaqui lands were part of the Mexican territory and it had a right to send forces wherever it felt necessary.

Cajeme's military service with the Mexican army was so exemplary that he was given the post of Alcalde Mayor of the Yaqui River area.
In the meantime, Cajeme's forces began attacking haciendas, ranches and stations of the Sonora Railroad in the Guaymas and Alamos districts.
Although Cajeme asked the Federal authorities for a truce, the military leaders indicated that all Yaqui territory was part of the nation of Mexico.

On November 27th the State Congress decreed the creation of Cajeme County with the town of the same name as its head.

The Yaquis, led by Cajeme, drove back government expeditions sent out to take possession of their land.
Yacqui lands became private landholdings, Cajeme was “tried” and shot in 1887, and thousands of Yaquis were sold like cattle for seventy-five pesos each to rich plantation owners in Yucatán and Quintana Roo.
There, unaccustomed to the hot tropical sun, they were worked as slaves in brutal conditions, and, with no hope for the future, died in large numbers.
