The Cajon Pass (elevation 4,190 ft/1,277 m) is a mountain pass separating the San Bernardino Mountains from the San Gabriel Mountains in Southern California in the United States.
The Santa Fe Railway was the first railroad to use the Cajon Pass as a route into the Los Angeles area.
During October and November of 2003, a number of wildfires devastated the hills and mountainsides near and around the pass, forcing the closure of Interstate 15.

The pass itself is not as steep as the Cajon Pass or the Grapevine, but it is still one of the deepest mountain passes in the 48 contiguous states.
The eastern end of the pass is at the junction of Interstate 10 and California State Route 111 near Whitewater Canyon.
The pass is one of the windiest places in Southern California, and it is one of three major wind farms in California, with the others being at Altamont Pass and Tehachapi Pass.

For the first several decades of its use the Pass was known for the presence of marauding Utes, under Walkera, " Hawk of the Mountains " and for Anglo and Mexican horse thieves.
The Pass is formed by the overlapping of two mountain ranges (the San Gabriels by the San Bernardinos) rather than by the activity of an ancient or defunct river system.
The trail winds through manzanita, yucca, chamise, sage and other high-desert plants to a vista providing a view of the Cajon Summit region and Cleghorn Ridge to the east, Ralston Peak to the southeast, Upper Lytle Creek Divide and Cucamonga Wilderness to the southwest and to the north are the Mormon Rocks.

The grades of this road were stated to be "only 30%," although the last 150 yards were acknowledged to be "precipitous." In the case of one caravan of fifteen wagons, it was reported that the usual unloading and reloading of the freight was avoided only by hitching 32 mules, in turn, to each wagon.
One would connect the mines at Holcomb Valley with Cajon Pass by traversing down the north slope of the San Bernardino Mountains, and this was the one to be constructed with funds obtained from subscriptions.
In 1865 Elliot Coues had traveled through Cajon Pass on a journey in which he retraced the route taken by Francisco Garces in 1775-76, and the data Coues gathered on the trip was later published in his book, On the Trail of a Spanish Pioneer.

OCTOBER 2, Cajon Pass, Calif. -- BLE President Clarence Monin joined Federal Railroad Administrator Jolene Molitoris here yesterday for an inspection trip aboard a Burlington Northern-Santa Fe train as it descended the infamous Cajon Pass, in the mountains above the Los Angeles Basin.
The purpose of the trip was to observe operations on the section of track which has seen a number of runaway accidents, the most recent on February 1, in which two crew members were killed.
Subsequent investigations showed that several Cajon Pass accidents and many others in the U.S. could have been prevented with newer two-way end of train telemetry devices in use.

This is especially useful for where the SP main emerges from a cut just north of 138 west of Cajon Junction (Photo #1, actually from Sunday, but there weren't any good southbounds on this line Saturday).
