So it was with the cakewalk, which further reinforced the master’s authority in allowing him to name a winner and thus make even his symbolic overthrow an attempt to appease him and an act of his decree.
That the nation’s attention came to the cakewalk is largely as a result of minstrel shows in the late nineteenth century.
The cakewalk’s original meaning was lost; where it had originally been fl slaves attempt to mock their superiors and for a minute live in autonomy, it had come to be the bumbling attempts of poor fls to mimic the manners of whites.

 Encyclopedia: Cakewalk (company)
Cakewalk is a company based in Boston, Massachusetts that develops music software.
Originally, back in the 1980s and in the 1990s, the company was named Twelve Tone Systems, Inc. and Cakewalk was the name of their flagship MIDI sequencer, first for DOS and since 1991 for Windows 3.0.
Interestingly, early versions of Cakewalk for DOS (up to 3.0) required the intelligent mode of the MPU-401 card and could not be used with today's clones, while later versions (since 4.0) relied on dumb UART mode only.

Where Do "Cakewalks" Come From? By Brendan I. Koerner   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Cakewalking slaves lampooned these stuffy moves by over-accentuating their high kicks, bows, and imaginary hat doffings, mixing the cartoonish gestures together with traditional African steps.
It was around this time that the cakewalk came to mean "easy"—not because the dance was particularly simple to do but rather because of its languid pace and association with weekend leisure.
Cakewalk contests also gave rise to two other well-worn clichés—"That takes the cake!" and "piece of cake." The latter phrase, which also means easy, is believed to have first been used in print by humorist Ogden Nash in The Primrose Path.
