The premise is compelling: a struggling, frustrated writer, Cal Cunningham, suffering from chronic writers' block, harbours dreams of writing a novel that will bring widespread critical acclaim - and free him from his mundane existence stacking books in a bookstore.
Cal rationalises his criminal actions, convincing himself that since it is his life, his experiences being described in the manuscript, he is, though not strictly speaking the author, entitled to claim the book as his own.

About the Author by John Colapinto | PopMatters Book Review
Cal Cunningham is a roguishly charming writer wannabe who's moved to New York City with grandiose visions of a meteoric ascent to the top of the bestseller list and a niche in the upper echelons of Manhattan's literary elite.
So great is Cal's disdain of Stewart that their only point of regular social interaction is "the weekly de-briefing session," during which, under Stewart's meticulous attorneylike questioning, Cal recounts in vivid detail his recent sexual conquests.
Cal quickly becomes like a circus juggler, walking a tightrope while trying to keep all the plates spinning on their sticks at the same time.

Keadle calls experience his trump over Cunningham
Democrat Cal Cunningham is a self-described “policy wonk.” He puts out position papers on issues, and his whole educational experience seems to have been geared toward public service.
Keadle, Cunningham and Libertarian Larry Clark of Iredell County are competing in a district made up of 20 precincts in Rowan County and 15 each in Davidson and Iredell counties.
Cunningham finds it interesting that the district has the largest number of dairy cattle and the second largest number of chickens in the state, while only 2 percent of the population works in agriculture, forestry or fishing.

 Keadle challenges Cunningham's residency
Keadle, in a certified letter to Cunningham and the Davidson County Board of Elections, claims that Cunningham does not meet the one-year residency requirement in the district, should he be elected Nov. 7.
Cunningham counters that he meets the residency requirement and has documentation that proves Davidson County has always been his permanent home, from which he he was only temporarily gone through the years to complete his schooling.
Cunningham counters that the N.C. Board of Elections defines a candidate's residence as "that place from which when absent an individual has the intent to return thereto." He emphasizes that the key issue, according to the elections law, is where the candidate intends to reside.
