Cal McVey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Cal McVey ( Montrose, Iowa ; August 30, 1850 – August 20, 1926) was a professional baseball player during the 1860s and 1870s. McVey's importance to the game stems from having played on two of the initial professional baseball teams - the original Cincinnati Red Stockings and the National Association Boston Red Stockings. McVey refused to play in the NL under the reserve rule, which was new in 1880.
