  Calah
If this be regarded as ascertained, Calah must be considered to have been, at one time, (about B.C. 930-720), the capital of the empire.
The platform upon which the temple-tower of Calah was situated measures circa 700 x 400 yds., and the portion not occupied by that erection afforded space for temples and palaces.
In the center of the East side of this platform lie the remains of the palace of Aššur-naṣir-âpli, the chambers and halls of which were paneled with sculptured and inscribed slabs, the principal doorways being flanked with finely carved winged and human-headed lions and bulls.

Where We Work ::: Iraq Heritage Program :: Nimrud
Calah was one of four major Assyrian royal cities in the region and can be considered to be in roughly the centre of the Assyrian homeland (Roaf, 1990).
Calah was to remain a leading centre of the Neo-Assyrian Empire until Sargon II moved the capital to Khorsabad (Dur Sharru-kin) in the late eighth century BC.
Calah is exceptionally significant for the heritage of Iraq because of this architectural corpus and its contribution to world art.

CALAH - LoveToKnow Article on CALAH   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The principal buildings discovered at Calah are :(a) the North-West palace, south of the ziggurat, one of the most complete and perfect Assyrian buildings known, about 350 ft. square, consisting of a central court, 129 ft. by 90 ft., surrounded by a number of halls and chambers.
While the ruins of Calah were remarkably rich in monumental material, enamelled bricks, bronze and ivory objects and the like, they yielded few of the inscribed clay tablets found in such great numbers at Nineveh and various Babylonian sites.
In the prestige of antiquity and religious renown, Calah was inferior to the older capital, Assur, while in population anti general importance it was much inferior to the neighboring Nineveh.

NINEVEH - LoveToKnow Article on NINEVEH
Nineveh was situated at the N.W. angle of an irregular trapezium of land which lay between the rivers Husur (Khausar, Choser) on the N.W., Gomal on the N.E. and E., Upper Zab on the S.E.' and S. and Tigris on the S. and W. In extent this plain is 25 m.
Admitting that this whole area was thickly inhabited and might be regarded by those at a distance as one city, and that the district may well have had a common name, which could hardly be Assur, there is yet no native evidence that Nineveh extended so far.
In deeds of sale the road to Calah is as often named as the kings highway to Arbela or Assur.

Grayson's articles point out that Calah was the capital of Assyria during the 9th-7th centuries BCE until it was succeeded by Nineveh which became Assyria's capital during the reign of Sennacherib (BCE) in the 7th century.
I suspect that the reason Calah was not given "pride of first mention" in Genesis is that during the time period of this book's composition it wasn't the capital, Nineveh was.

Calah, Resen and Rehoboth-Ir: Concerning the positions of two of the cities mentioned with Nineveh, namely, Calah and Resen, there can be no doubt, notwithstanding that Resen has not yet been identified--Calah is the modern Nimroud, and Resen lay between that site and Nineveh.
The palace mound lies on its northwest face, and consists of an extensive platform with the remains of Sargon's palace and its temple, with a ziqqurat or temple-tower similar to those at Babylon, Borsippa, Calah and elsewhere.
The site of Resen, "between Nineveh and Calah," is thought to be the modern Selamieh, 12 miles South of Nineveh, and 3 miles North of Nimroud (Calah).

calah - International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
As Nineveh is mentioned by Hammurabi, who reigned about 2000 BC, it is clear that that city was already, in his time, an important place; and the passage in Genesis 10:11 implies, though it does not actually prove, that Calah was of about the same period.
The Assyrian king Assur-nacir-apli (circa 885 BC) states that Calah was made (probably = founded) by Shalmaneser (I) circa 1300 BC, but this is possibly simply an indication that he rebuilt it.
In the center of the East side of this platform lie the remains of the palace of Assur-nacir-apli, the chambers and halls of which were paneled with sculptured and inscribed slabs, the principal doorways being flanked with finely carved winged and human-headed lions and bulls.
