The Early Permian saw the extinction of the great calamite trees and shrubby Sphenophyllum, and the origin of the family Equisetaceae, to which the only living sphenophyte genus Equisetum belongs.
The Equisetaceae underwent a minor renaissance in the Triassic, with the evolution of several new forms.

Starting in the Carboniferous Era, before there were dinosaurs, Calamites gradually seemed to take over and filled the niche that grass does today.
It is possible, though, that T-rex could have trampled ferns and calamites among other plants.
The model itself is best in.3ds format and needs a good 'smooth-over.' It is also well suited for the overgrown giant calamites that rimmed the brackish swamps of the Carboniferous Era.

 Brass (WebBible Encyclopedia) - ChristianAnswers.Net
Brass has been known to man since prehistoric times, long before zinc itself was discovered.
It was produced smelting copper ore that contained zinc or by melting copper together with calamite, a zinc ore. During this process, the zinc is extracted from the calamite and instantly mixes with the copper.
Pure zinc, on the other hand, is too reactive to be produced by ancient metalworking techniques.

I am surprised they ever became extinct as their descendants constantly survive the most brutal treatment I can think of.
The word is so similar to "calamity", yet it appears to come from a completely different source: "calamite" from the Greek for "reed"; "calamity" from the French, and before that the Latin calamitas, related, oddly enough, to the Latin word for "uninjured".
I am straying again, but it has made me wonder how a word meaning "uninjured" came to evolve into a word meaning "a disaster or misfortune".
