On seeing the bird, it was obvious we were looking at a large lark and after watching for a few moments, I realised it was flying like a Calandra Lark, and said just that.
Calandra Lark breeds from Iberia and Morocco through the Mediterranean to northern Afghanistan and Russian Turkistan.
Accepted records of 'fly-over' rare larks must surely be at a premium, however, the fact that the bird was seen by several highly experienced and respected observers may ultimately have been enough to see it through.

The Calandra Lark, Melanocorypha calandra, breeds in warm temperate countries around the Mediterranean and eastwards through Turkey into northern Iran and southern Russia.
It is replaced further east by its relative, the Bimaculated Lark.
This is a large, robust lark, 17.5-20 cm long.

The Bimaculated Lark is easiest to identify in flight when the lack of a white trailing edge to the wing is distinctive and the tail has white tips rather than white outer feathers.
Also, although the underwing is dark it isn’t as strikingly fl as on a Calandra Lark.
Restricted in this region to the central plateau of Turkey where it sometimes occurs alongside Calandra Lark, especially at the end of the breeding season.

Timoneda d`Alfes is the only site in Catalonia where Dupont`s Lark still breeds, a stronghold of the eastern Iberian population.
The number of breeding pairs has decreased alarmingly from 40-60 pairs in 1990 to less than 20 pairs in 2001.
In June 1998 the Catalan government introduced a special plan for protecting the site, stating that the use of the aerodrome was provisional and including it in the list of natural interesting sites, (PEIN) which it had initiated in 1985.

As we drove towards SANTA MARTA we found a pond with stripeless tree frogs as well as broad bodied chasers and emperor dragonflies, further down the road we saw vultures landing over the horizon, further investigation, keeping very quite in the car, revelled 100+ vultures around a cattle watering hole.

Calandra Larks often look too big to be larks so at first glance you might think they are waders or even small birds of prey!
At rest, the large size, massive conical bills and prominent fl neck patches quickly eliminate all the other larks except Bimaculated Lark.
Calandras can be separated from this species by their plainer faces, white outer feathers and white trailing edge to the wings.

I had a short list of species that were new for me in Portugal, including Great and Little Bustards, Red-necked Nightjar, Pallid Swift, Waxbill, Black-shouldered Kite and Calandra Lark.
On top of this were possible Black Vulture, Black Wheatear and Audouin’s Gull, but all of these would be very difficult to see.

I have never seen one in about 14 visits to the Algarve until 2003 when I finally nailed a Great Bustard, but still after the Little one.
Not many outstanding birds on this trip but quality made up for quantity as also had Pintail Sandgrouse, Grag Martin, Thekla and Calandra Larks and Isabelline Wheatear.
A call in at Cacela Velha brought Rock Sparrow and Purple Heron.
