Calapan City is known to be a lively and cheerful metropolis in Region IV, Philippines.
The water was so severe that it even reached the city proper (urban areas) which is 15 kilometers away from Bucayao, the last barangay (county) of Calapan City and the area from which the furious Bucayao dike is located.
The main cause of the unexpected disaster in the city capital of Oriental Mindoro was the destruction of the Bucayao dike and the overflowing Panggalaan river in Naujan (a nearby town).

A river that runs through Calapan city overflowed early Saturday following several days of continuous rain, breaching a 700-meter section of an earthen dike, city administrator Salvador Leachon said.
More than 170,000 people in Calapan and about 30,000 more in four nearby provinces were affected by last week's floods.

As many as 20,000 people from about 20 villages in Calapan, the capital of Mindoro Oriental province on Mindoro island, had been affected by late Saturday in the latest floods, said City Administrator Salvador Leachon, who helped evacuate residents.
Leachon said the floodwaters were "higher than a man" in some areas and flowing closer to the city center by the minute.
