Topic: Calcium silicate

Calcium silicate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Calcium silicate, otherwise known as slag, has a low bulk density and high physical water absorption.
Calcium silicate competes in these realms against rockwool as well as proprietary insulation solids, such as perlite mixtures and vermiculite bonded with sodium silicate.
It is also the remains of when molten iron is made from iron ore and calcium carbonate to produce slag in a blast furnace.

Process for the manufacture of calcium silicate hydrate objects - Patent 4131638
Several years ago calcium silicate hydrate insulations appeared which were reinforced by materials other than asbestos, notably glass fibers and fibers of organic polymers such as polyesters.
Small amounts of other compounds in addition to silica may be present in the siliceous material, such as alumina, and in fact may be advantageous in the formation of particular crystalline forms of calcium silicate hydrate.
The process of this invention therefore is capable of producing satisfactory calcium silicate hydrate materials for insulation and other uses in good yield with the optimum use of processing equipment and with the most efficient utilization of thermal energy.

 Calcium Silicate
Clothing contaminated with calcium silicate should be removed, and provisions should be made for the safe removal of the chemical from the clothing.
Calcium silicate should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area in tightly sealed containers that are labeled in accordance with OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard [29 CFR 1910.1200].
Calcium silicate is not subject to EPA emergency planning requirements under the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) (Title III) in 42 USC 11022.

Raw materials of calcium silicate sheet are siliceous material (ground quartz, seyssatite etc.), caleareous material (cement, lime etc.) or reinforcing fiber (pulp fiber, glass fiber, asbestos etc.).
Tobermorite crystal is generated by siliceous material and caleareous material under conditions of high temperature and high pressure.
The crystal is particularly stable; calcium silicate sheeting made from Tobermorite has many functional characteristics including: fireproofing, damp-proofing, good endurance, low deformation rates and heat-insulation.

Calcium Silicate often serves as the insulation for pipe supports in high temperature applications.
It is an insulating material composed of hydrous calcium silicate which, because of its light weight, low thermal conductivity and exceptional structural strength is ideal for the insulation of high temperature piping and equipment.
Adaptable: Calcium Silicate can also be used on a various shapes and sizes of surfaces.

The paper is the first to document the neutralizing effects of Wollastonite, a calcium silicate, on an acidic stream.
Over one hundred and thirty pounds (61kg) of this naturally occurring calcium silicate mineral, mined from the Adirondacks and manufactured into a pellet form, was manually applied to the study stream.
He goes on to warn that, "Viewing calcium applications as a prescriptive cure for acid rain is like a runner viewing steroids as a cure for a bad knee.

Hydrous calcium silicate insulation products manufactured by recycling greenware - Patent 4523955
The term hydrous calcium silicate denotes a crystalline compound formed by the reaction of lime (CaO), silica (SiO.sub.2), and water (H.sub.2 O).
The two hydrous calcium silicates that generally are of interest are: tobermorite having the formula 4CaO.5SiO.sub.2.5H.sub.2 O; and xonotlite, having the formula 5CaO.5SiO.sub.2.XH.sub.2 O. Hydrous calcium silicate products often are used as heat insulation materials.
After a mixture of pulverized siliceous and calcareous materials are suspended in an aqueous slurry sufficient time must be allotted for the slurry to gel before it can be processed further.

Mineral Gallery - the Silicate Class
The silicates are the largest, the most interesting and the most complicated class of minerals by far.
Sorosilicates have two silicate tetrahedrons that are linked by one oxygen ion and thus the basic chemical unit is the anion group (Si2O7) with a negative six charge (-6).
In the double chain silicates the cleavage angle is close to 120 and 60 degrees forming rhombic cross sections making a convenient way to distinguish double chain silicates from single chain silicates.

Detailing of Calcium Silicate / Renaissance Stone Veneers
Calcium Silicate Units such as Renaissance Stone are high density, severe weathering structural masonry units.
To the designer and installer, this means that these calcium silicate units have a slightly different set of detailing requirements.
When used in conjunction with brick veneer, the expansion joints in the brick simply continue through the calcium silicate units at the same spacing.

Portland cement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The hydration of these compounds and the properties of the calcium silicate hydrates produced are therefore particularly important.
Calcium silicate hydrates contain less CaO than the calcium silicates in cement clinker, so calcium hydroxide is formed during the hydration of Portland cement.
Setting starts after approximately one to three hours, when first calcium silicate hydrates form on the surface of the clinker particles, which are very fine-grained in the beginning.

This water dissolves the salt, and the resulting salt water combines with the remaining salt, cementing the grains together into a solid mass.
Calcium silicate absorbs moisture from the air better than salt, and does not dissolve in the water it absorbs.

The poorly crystalline calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) phases that form near room temperature, which include the technically important C-S-H gel phase formed during the hydration of Portland cement, have a broad similarity to the crystalline minerals tobermorite and jennite, but are characterized by extensive atomic imperfections and structural variations at the nanometer scale.
Relationships between the aqueous solubility and chemical structure are reported for specimens formed by different preparation methods and with a broad range of compositions.
Based on this evidence, the solubility curves are interpreted as representing a spectrum of metastable phases whose structures range from purely tobermorite-like to largely jennite-like.
