The Rochester Americans are one of the most storied franchises in the history of the American Hockey League, winner of six Calder Cups.
The Americans won the Calder Cup in 1965, 1966, 1968, 1983, 1987, and 1996.
In the 2003-04 season, the Americans came close to the Calder Cup, but were beaten 4-1 by the Milwaukee Admirals in the Western Conference final.

In the 1980s and early '90s, the Adirondack Red Wings were consistently one of the top teams in AHL and won three Calder Cups, while their parent club Detroit didn't even reach the Stanley Cup finals (until 1995).
And when Detroit won consecutive Stanley Cups (1996-97 and '97-98), Adirondack struggled and failed to make it out of the first round of the playoffs for the final five seasons of its existence.
With so much success over the past eight seasons, including two Stanley Cup titles, the Devils, and ultimately the Rats, are paying for that success with lower draft choices and the need to trade younger talent to improve rosters heading into the postseason.

We saw this with Buffalo a while back where they had a core of young players who won the Calder Cup together at Rochester in the mid-1990s and then came up and went to the conference finals and Cup finals in successive seasons.
They won a Calder Cup and off of that, we went to the Stanley Cup finals in 1998 with a lot of those guys playing a critical role on our hockey team.
Hopefully there is a Calder Cup championship in Portland and it leads to a Stanley Cup championship in Washington.
