Harcourt is a small town located in a valley at the foot of Mt Alexander (741 m) in the Central Highlands of Victoria, 120 km north-west of Melbourne on the Calder Highway and 30 km south of Bendigo.
On the other side of the road, where the Midland and Calder Highways cross, is the Heritage Centre which has a display relating to the history of the apple industry, particularly as it relates to Harcourt.
About 2 km from the highway, on the left-hand side of the road, are the remnants of an old stone cottage which was occupied by a shepherd working on the original sheep station which was owned by a Dr Barker.

 Calder Freeway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Originally just a short spur of the Tullamarine Freeway linking to the Calder Highway in Keilor in suburban Melbourne, it has been extended in phases to Kyneton subsuming all the older Calder highway stretches.
The Calder Highway was named after William Calder, who was chairman of the Victorian road construction authority formerly known as the Country Roads Board from 1913 to 1928.
South of the Victoria/New South Wales border the highway is a two-lane, single carriageway in each direction, continuing through northwest Victoria from the Abbotsford Bridge, through Merbein to the major regional town of Mildura in the state's north-west.

The Federal Government is to expand the road and rail freight precinct between Dynon Road and the Port of Melbourne, build the Deer Park bypass and upgrade the Calder Highway as part of the biggest overhaul of road funding in a generation.
The reshaping of road funding will mean greater pressure on state governments to contribute to national roads, with the Government scrapping the existing system of a designated "national highway" and roads of national importance.
The Government will also promise to pay for the next stage of the Calder Highway upgrade near Kyneton, worth about $85 million, but has fallen short of a state request for $193 million to fully duplicate the road.

He said the release of the stickers is also timely given that we are heading into the busy Christmas holiday season.

Description: National Road 79 is Victoria's shortest National Route, and probably the most useless, since it has become shorter and shorter, and the only reason it still exists is because it is within the metropolitan area where the alpha-numeric system has not taken over, except for some M routes.
NR79 originally followed the Calder Highway from Melbourne to Mildura, then along Silver City Highway in New South Wales past Broken Hill (which eventually becomes an unsealed track).
NR79 begins on Kings Way at West Gate Freeway (M1), crossing the Yarra River into the CBD (although it is part of the City Bypass), along King Street, right up Curzon Street in North Melbourne, bending into Harker Street, then left along Flemington Road, disappearing once you hit the Western Link (MR43) exit.

A small town 30km north-west along the Calder Highway from Melbourne, Diggers Rest began literally as an overnight resting spot for miners travelling to and from the Bendigo gold fields.
But Diggers Rest's 10 minutes of fame came in 1910 when American escapologist and adventurer Harry Houdini came to town with his Voisin biplane at the invitation of the Aerial League of Australia.

The object was visible to the patrolling police officers for 15 to 20 seconds.
