We have developed a new information pack which provides a clear picture of the structure of DASS in Calderdale, information on dementia, roles of the paid staff and volunteers and useful contacts which is handed out to people during our visit.
The befriending service has proven to be a success with the formation of very good relationships both with people who have early stages of dementia and their families.
This is indicative in both the amount of referrals we have received, the support we have gained from other agencies and of course most importantly the impact it has had on the people that have used and benefited from its existence.

Since its inception in September 2001, Calderdale Against the War has widened its scope from campaigning against American military aggression, to cover the occupation of Palestine, and other injustices.

This report suggests that lesbian, gay and bisexual young people in Calderdale may be vulnerable to attempted and completed suicide, self-harming behaviours, alcohol and drug misuse, homelessness, HIV infection, school drop out, social isolation and family rejection and that there is little service provision geared to the needs of this vulnerable group.
Indeed, a recent Social Services report which discussed the needs of young people in Calderdale into the next millennium did not even mention this group and whilst they were mentioned in a Calderdale/Kirklees report on young people and mental health, it was tokenistic and there has not been any follow-up work initiated.
Calderdale will be lesbian, gay or bisexual, there are some 2,439 highly vulnerable young people whose needs are currently being unmet by service providers; this is in a climate when the present (and past) government have expressed a commitment to reducing suicide, HIV infection, homelessness, alcohol/drug misuse and social exclusion in general.

Calderdale Community Education employed Jan to deliver a unique training programme on Anti-Oppression which looked at Classism, Racism, Sexism, Homophobia and Disableism; this was a follow-on from previous Homophobia Awareness training with full-time workers.
Gay and Bisexual Young People in Calderdale’ as well as copies of the booklets ‘I think I might be a lesbian…now what do I do?’ and ‘Young Gay Men Talking.’ Workers had the opportunity to look at the causes and effects of oppression and to develop action plans to make their own units more accessible.

 Hebweb news 2005: Calderdale Housing Campagin launches today
As a matter of urgency, Calderdale Council should take steps to regain control over the approval of additional housing units in the district - so that this is in accordance with the annual requirements of regional and Calderdale policy - after a period of major oversupply.
Following the forthcoming publication of the Calderdale housing needs survey, the Council should consider increasing the proportion of the units within any development that are required to be affordable and decrease the threshold of development size to which this applies.
We also call on communities across Calderdale to join in this campaign for affordable and sustainable housing, and to prevent excessive and inappropriate housing development - and to contact their local councillors to urge their support for this campaign.
