Daviess and Caldwell counties were established by the Missouri state legislature in December of 1836.
Caldwell County, Missouri was created specifically for Latter Day Saint settlement, but Daviess' status was less certain.
Missouri's governor, Lilburn Boggs, responded to the crisis with his famous Extermination Order, in which he called out 2,500 militiamen and threatened to drive the Mormons from the state or "exterminate them".

 Thomas H. Caldwell of Callaway County Missouri
Thomas Caldwell, the father, was born in Paris, Bourbon county, Kentucky, on the 20th of June, 1792, and was reared in the famous Blue Grass Region of that State.
Coming to Missouri in 1826, he immediately settled in Callaway county, locating in what was then a part of Round Prairie township where he bought and entered large bodies of land, aggregating in all nearly 1,000 acres.
Caldwell has recently erected a large pottery building, having a fine deposit of clay, and is preparing to engage in the manufacture of pottery, stoneware, etc., on a large scale.

The Caldwells and Kinkeads were early residents of Augusta County and the area that became Greenbrier Co., Virginia.
The sixth child in the second family of Samuel Caldwell was born about 1780 in VA. She was mentioned in her half-brother's will--James Caldwell in 1840 in St. Francois Co., MO. She married George King.

James his wife Phebe (Simpson), were converted in Tazewell County, Illinois as a result of the preaching of Lyman Wight and John Corrill on their way to Missouri as part of the Western Mission, the summer of 1831.
According to his daughter, Mary, "they bought them an inheritance in Jackson County and worked in unison with the rest of the LDS until they were driven from their houses in 1833." Following the expulsion the family moved to Clay County, Missouri.
With the Latter-day Saints in Missouri in 1838 and was among those arraigned at the hearing in Richmond, Ray County.

The main body of the Mormons were then forced to sign over their property in Far West and Caldwell County to pay for the militia muster and then leave the state.
The county seat was moved to Kingston, Missouri and many of the log houses in Far West were relocated.
