Yarborough finished second behind David Pearson and showed faith in the points system, although he was losing ground despite finishing ahead of Petty.

William Caleb "Cale" Yarborough (born March 27, 1939 in Timmonsville, South Carolina, near the Famous Darlington Raceway), is a former NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver and was one of the series engaging personalities.
Cale is possibly most remembered for his involvement in a final-lap crash and subsequent fight with Donnie Allison at the 1979 Daytona 500.
Yarborough refused to give ground and as he pulled alongside Allison, his left side tires left the pavement and went into the wet and muddy infield grass.

Everybody who ever saw Cale Yarborough drive a race car will have their own memory about the man who crawled under the fence at Darlington when he was 11 years old to watch the first Southern 500 in 1950.
Cale would see his career take sort of a down turn in 1979 where he only won four races and one pole but his eighteen top five’s were good enough to earn him 4th place in the year end standings.
Cale has won the Daytona 500 four times, including back to back wins in 1983 and 84, he was voted most popular driver in 1967, in 1975 he was only the fourth driver to win $1 million in prize money and was voted “American Driver of the Year” in 1977.

In the 1979 Daytona 500 (the first ever professional stock car race televised in its entirety), he and Donnie Allison were battling for the win in the final laps before colliding on the backstretch on the last lap after Cale attempted to pass.
