Caledonia is one of several communities in the single-tier regional municipality of Haldimand County.
Caledonia is located at the intersection of Ontario Highway 6 and Regional Road 54 (within the town, these streets are called Argyle Street and Caithness Street respectively) on the Grand River.
Caledonia became a settlement on the Grand River, a mill was established here to take advantage of the proximity to the waters of Lake Erie.

The current Caledonia land dispute came to the attention of the general public on February 28, 2006.
On that date, protesters from the Six Nations of the Grand River began a demonstration to raise awareness about First Nation land claims in Ontario, Canada, and particularly about their claim to a parcel of land in Caledonia, Ontario, a community within the single-tier municipality of Haldimand County, roughly 20 kilometres southwest of Hamilton.
August 11: The Government of Ontario announces that it is appealing Superior Court Justice David Marshall's ruling to break off negotiations to the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

Ontario’s poor excuse for a provincial police force shouldn’t be taking sides at all — they should be doing what they are paid to do — keep the peace and enforce the law.
The residents of Caledonia; the ones who were leading peaceful lives and minding their own business before the occupation began, are now "the protesters".
To call the residents the protesters, even if some of were committing criminal acts is absurd and is perhaps the best illustration of an out-of-control police force whose major concern is carrying out the wishes of the government.

In April "Ontario Provincial Police staged a pre-dawn raid on the site in an effort to remove the protesters after a court injunction ordered that they disperse." This raised tensions without actually removing the protesters, who then took to blocking a local highway.
And it is intriguing that on the same day the Caledonia construction site was first occupied — February 28, 2006 — the Grassy Narrows First Nation far away in the wilds of northern Ontario also "sent letters warning the chief executives of Weyerhaeuser...
