 | | At that time, it was frowned upon for a girl to "grow up," i.e., enter puberty, while in school because, in her parents' eyes, this could drive the girl to immoral behavior or, even worse, early pregnancy in a "mixed" school setting. |
 | | Recognized as a driving force to get young girls to go to school, and to stay in school, Binta was selected to be one of the twelve women whose photos and life stories are featured on a USAID-sponsored girls' role model calendar for 2002. |
 | | The women featured on the calendar are are, like Binta, extraordinary women who overcame obstacles to achieve their personal and professional dreams, or who, despite their lack of education, continue to promote the importance of sending girls to school. |
