Topic: Calendering

Calendering - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Calendering is a finishing process applied to textiles and paper.
Calendering is a final process in which heat and pressure are applied to a fabric by passing it between heated rollers, imparting a flat, glossy, smooth surface.
Calendering is applied to fabrics in which a smooth, flat surface is desirable, such as most cotton, many linens and silks, and various man-made fabrics.

The controlled variable used in the calender is the linear load and/or nip pressure, which determines the quality of the surface of the paper as well as the final thickness.
The calender C is a multi-nip calender in which successive nips are formed between the rolls superimposed in a stack of calender rolls.
Method according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the calendering is effected in off-line calendering, wherein the paper run onto the reel after the drying in a moisture lower than the target moisture, is unwound from the reel and it is run to the calendering via wetting.

Calendering is still King for High Volume PVC
Few new calenders are expected to be built in coming years, and most calenders now in use are relatively old.
By the end of that decade, calendering was being used there for both rigid and plasticized compounds (the tough differentiation between the two types is that plasticized compounds contain at least 20-percent plasticizer).
The sheet is taken off the last calender roll by a series of small stripper rolls and guided through a set of embossing rolls, and then over and under a series of cooling rolls, before finally being wound on a tube or cut into sheets for shipment.

The inlet moisture of calendering and the calendering temperature constitute variables by means of which the calendering result relating to the surface quality can be adjusted so that it becomes suitable in view of coating either by means of one variable or both variables.
When the paper is calendered by means of the combined effect of a high temperature, high moisture level and long residence time, the greatest tensions are relaxed and the original shape of the fibres is partly restored during the drying.
One possible alternative is also that the paper is reeled after the calendering, as in Figs 5 and 6, and this reeled paper, which thus has suitable surface properties as a result of calendering, is subjected to coating in a different coating unit as an off-line treatment with respect to the calendering.

"The chief essentials in calendering are the moisture present in the cloth at the moment of calendering, the composition, number, and arrangement of the bowls, together with their pressure and temperature.
The bowls may be made of metal or of compressed material such as cotton or paper; the degree of hardness depends on the particular finish for which the bowl is intended.
"Friction calendering, however, gives a higher gloss and a greater closing of the yarns; it is produced by bringing the cloth into contact with a heated, polished, chilled-iron bowl which is travelling at a faster speed than the cloth itself...."

 Smoothness Problems (Troubleshooting Guide)
In particular, the type and extent of calendering usually causes the largest change in paper smoothness and density as the sheet passes through the system.
Smoother paper can be achieved by increasing the nip pressures in calendering and by wetting the sheet with a mist spray or wet-box application before the web passes through a nip.
Since calendering makes paper denser at the same time that it makes the paper smoother, papermakers are continually wrestling with issues of trying to separate these two variables.

TAPPI -- leading technical association for the pulp, paper, and converting industry.
A dynamic model of the calendering process was developed by appropriate combination of the model of transient local calender roll deformation with the calendering equation used to estimate, at a specific CD position, in-nip strain from permanent strain.
After validation with published measurements on an industrial calender, the effectiveness of this model for minimizing thickness nonuniformity in the CD dimension through implementation of model predictive control of calendering was demonstrated.
For a multi-roll calender stack of industrial specifications this demonstration showed an impressive reduction in CD control response time through use of multi-step control action.
