Eday (ON Eid-ey - Isthmus Isle) is less fertile than the other outer North Isles, and much of it is peaty heather moorland.
Carrick House was first built in 1633 and in 1725 nearby Calf Sound was the scene of the capture by its then owner, James Fea, of “Pirate Gow”.
The Eday Heritage Walk takes in the most interesting sights in the north of the island, while the Warness Walk does the same at the south end.

Near this house is a gulf of the sea in which is a very commodious harbour; and on a very high promontory near the harbour good hawks nest and are each year exported from here, as too in many other promontories of other islands of the Orkneys.
And to the north it is so low (for it rises higher to the south) that to sailors ignorant of the island and still at a long distance from it at sea, it is not visible at all; and hence shipwreck often occurs to those who sail there at night.
Now they prepare food and drink for themselves, either with straw, or with animal dung, or with long stalks and leaves, as of seaweed (of which there is a great amount both here and in all the islands of the Orkneys) dried in the sun in summer-time, and carefully saved like treasure for this purpose.

Taking the dinghy across the fiercly flowing tide was a little nerve wracking but the trusty Yamaha never faltered and we dragged the dinghy up the kelp covered boulders below the ruins of trhe 17th century saltworks.
Once round the bottom of Eday I poled out the genoa as the reach got broader and we struggled to make headway on our diagonal track across the tide towards Shapinsay and Vasa Sound.
On our desired track our VMG was down to under a knot, so I rounded up a little and broad reached as fast as possible across the main tidal stream, heading for the relatively tideless waters to the North of Shapinsay.

On February 10, 1725, Gow launched a brief attack on the Hall of Clestrain in Orphir, belonging to Robert Honeyman of Graemsay.
Returning to the Revenge with his plunder, Gow sailed north towards Eday, arriving three days later.
Although he had intended to raid Carrick House, the residence of Gow's old scholfriend James Fea, dangerous currents off the island's north coast carried the Revenge too near the Calf o' Eday where it grounded opposite Carrick House.

 Fairwinds 2005
Lots of wind first astern then abeam as we ran down to the cardinal at the South of Egilsay then astern again as we crossed the choppy waters of the Westray Firth, and we belted along under headsail only heading for Ferness Pint and the Calf of Eday.
En route though the fore cast of further strong winds coupled with uncertainty about the anchorage in Calf Sound brought on a change of plan and we headed for Pierrowal on Westray instead.
Coming abeam of the Southern end of Westray the wind began to come round forward of the beam, and we changed the sail plan to main with one reef and working jib sized genoa.
