The centre opened 14 Sep 1985 with a gala concert in Jack Singer Concert Hall of orchestral and choral music, dance and drama, featuring the world premiere of Brian Macdonald's ballet for The Garden of the Heart by R.
The Calgary Philharmonic celebrated the opening and its own 30th anniversary by performing Mahler's Symphony No. 8 18-19 September with over 400 performers, including the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus, three Calgary children's choirs, and eight soloists, under the baton of Mario Bernardi.
The Carthy Foundation of Calgary donated $750,000 for an organ, in memory of Mrs Margaret Mannix.

In 1929, after considerable lobbying by Calgary businessmen and officials, the federal government finally passed an appropriation to cover the cost of a new public building for Calgary.
The Performing Arts project sympathetically integrated the Public Building and the Burns Building into the overall design for the Calgary Centre for the Performing Arts.
Calgary Centre for the Performing Arts was officially opened September 14, 1985 by Peter Lougheed.

Canada's national portrait gallery should be located in Calgary instead of Ottawa as a "statement about Canada's nationhood," says the president of the western city's performing arts centre.
Colin Jackson, president of Calgary's Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts, said he has heard the portrait gallery will be located in a building being built in downtown Calgary by energy giant Encana — which is consistent with information brought up by Ottawa MP Paul Dewar in the House of Commons last week.
In Calgary, he said, the portrait gallery would be a valuable teaching tool for the art school.

The Edmund C. Bovey Award is unique in Canada: it honours individuals from the business community for outstanding support of the arts by presenting them with a cheque for $20,000 to be distributed to the arts organizations of their choice.
While the jury was amazed by the depth and variety of arts support undertaken by nominees from across Canada, and moved by the eloquence and enthusiasm of their nominators, the jurors were unanimous in their choice of Ted Rozsa as this year's winner.
