Zoocheck Canada Inc. - Programs & Projects - Whales in Captivity - Calgary Zoo   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
For almost a year the zoo steadfastly denied that any decisions had been made about what animals would be displayed, despite the fact that drawings of the Arctic Shores complex, including a beluga pool and a polar bear exhibit, were found on the website of the zoo's architectural firm.
Despite this, both levels of government have the ability to direct that their funding go to specific zoo projects, such as improving the existing animal accommodation and care, and not to supporting the acquisition of highly problematic, wide-ranging species whose needs cannot be met in captivity.
Please write to the Premier of Alberta and the City of Calgary Mayor and Members of Council and urge them not to commit further funds to the Calgary Zoo and to redirect funds pledged so far to improving existing conditions, instead of acquiring new, highly controversial species whose needs cannot be met in captivity.

calgary zoo is tops ? - SkyscraperCity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
The fact that it's 710 acres, within a 11,500 acre park, is why it's location is best suited to the way the zoo displays it's exibits...in large areas that resemble the natural habitats of various animals and their continents.
Toronto Zoo is so large (710 acres), because animals are exhibited in their natural environments.
The zoo faces a number of problems though...because Toronto has so many attractions, zoos tend to be a bit passe in terms of competing with so many other attractions around the city...because the zoo is so comprehensive, it's very expensive to run, and it really doesn't get that much attendance.
