Calhoun, the seat of McLean county, is located on KY 81 at the Green River.
It was established in 1785 by Henry Rhoads as Rhoadsville and was later known as Fort Vienna.
Calhoun was incorporated in 1852 and became the seat of McLean county when it was formed in 1854.

Calhoun went to Lexington, Kentucky in the fall of 1888 and enrolled as a student in Kentucky University and the College of the Bible.
Calhoun remained in Lexington for four years and graduated on June 7, 1892 with an A.B. degree, in classical courses, from the University and with a classical diploma from the College of the Bible.
Calhoun engaged in extensive correspondence with McGarvey during the summer of 1900 in an effort to arrange a faculty appointment in the College of the Bible.

In November 1861 some 10,000 Union troops, mostly from Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio, were sent to Calhoun to protect Lock and Dam Number 2 and the Green River commanded by Maj. Gen.
Thomas L. Crittenden, the troops remained in the area until February 1862 when they were moved south as the Union army undertook initiatives that would ultimately lead to the Vicksburg campaign.
While at Calhoun the troops established Camp Calhoun, located west of present-day downtown Calhoun.

Visitors to Calhoun, Kentucky complained about the deplorable conditions as in a letter written on stationery from an Indianapolis Hotel to Governor O. Morton which describes the conditions that they found the soldiers in.
In the meantime the ammunition of the Thirty-first and Second Kentucky having been almost exhausted, an attempt was made to relieve them by sending in the First Kentucky to take the place of the Thirty-first, and the Ninetieth Ohio to relieve the Second Kentucky.
The brigade went into the engagement with the 1st Kentucky Infantry in support of the artillery of the division, the other three regiments forming a single line with the 2nd Kentucky on the right of the brigade, the 31st Indiann in the center, and the 90th Ohio on the left.
