Alabama ranks first among all states in percentage of tornadoes that are "significant." A significant tornado is defined as one that resulted in F-2 or greater damage, caused a fatality, or both (Grazulis 1993).
High casualty rates in Alabama may be a function not only of tornado intensity and frequency, but of the historical difficulties associated with detecting them in the region owing to low visibility from trees, topography, high humidity, and darkness during peak tornado season (early Spring).
In comparing survey data taken from Alabama college students to that of college students from the "Midwest" (Illinois) and the "Great Plains" (Oklahoma), religious and cultural differences that might exist were not expressed in perceptions of the tornado threat, understanding of weather terminology, mitigative strategies, or knowledge of, access to, and use of warning systems.
