A conservative group that led the fight against the bill notes that it was authored by lesbian Assembly member Jackie Goldberg (D-Los Angeles), and it received the minimum number of votes needed for passage.
In a news release, the Campaign for California Families said the bill reverses Proposition 22, the Protection of Marriage Initiative, in which 61 percent of California voters said marriage was the union of one man and one woman.
