That party nominees will be equally observant of internal party procedures and equally respectful of party discipline when their nomination depends on the general electorate rather than on the party faithful seems to us improbable.
When a political party defines the organization and composition of its governing units, when it decides what candidates to endorse, and when it decides whether and how to communicate those endorsements to the public, it is engaged in the kind of private expressive associational activity that the First Amendment protects.

Chris Stampolis, President of the California Democratic Council, an association of Democratic Clubs and County Committees in the state, said they had just voted to endorse Prop 89 the day before, and that in excess of three-quarters of their members had voted for that position.
And all the rationalization in the world about "standing to sue" will not cover the truth that the party caved in to those segments of organized labor that think that their access to the party and its office holders is more important than good public policy and the long term health of the Democratic Party.

 California Democratic Party Reiterates Support for IRV - Marin Ranked Voting
- In the political reform section of its 2006 platform, adopted April 30th at its state convention, the California Democratic Party reiterated its support for IRV with the following sentence: "Encourage, where feasible, instant run-off elections".
Californians for Electoral Reform (CfER) board members Steve Chessin and Rob Dickinson collected the signatures that convinced the platform committee to restore that sentence after it had been dropped from the pre-Convention draft.
In October of last year, the Executive Board of the California Democratic Party adopted this resolution supporting giving communities, including general law cities and counties, the option to use IRV in local elections.
