Topic: California Field Poll

2003 California recall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
California was hit harder than other states at the end of the speculative bubble known as the "dot-com boom" — from 1996 to 2000 — when Silicon Valley was the center of the internet economy.
California had a $95 million contract with Oracle Corporation that was found to be unnecessary and overpriced by the state auditor.
Polls also showed that the two leading candidates, Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante, a Democrat, and Hollywood actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, were neck and neck with about 25-35% of the vote each, and Bustamante with a slight lead in most polls.

 Mystery Pollster: October 31, 2005 - November 6, 2005
Polling the Props: Part II As the special election campaign draws to a close, the polls in California indicate an across-the-board sweep of four propositions supported by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Collectively, the Field Poll, the LA Times Poll and the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) are among the most respected survey research organizations in the country.
The Polimetrix approach to political polling is to draw a true random sample from the list of registered voters provided by election officials then go into their panel of volunteers and select the closest possible match for each sampled voter based on a set of demographic variables.

Mystery Pollster: Polling the Props: Part I
California has had only two statewide special elections in the last fifteen years in an odd numbered "off year." In 1993, according to data from the California Secretary of State, only 27.7% of the eligible population voted.
In the 2002 general election, the low turnout took California's three preeminent pollsters (Field, PPIC and the LA Times) by surprise according to a paper co-authored by principals from each of those organizations (that was presented at the 2003 AAPOR conference).
According to the California Secretary of State, the percentage of voters that skipped any one of the propositions varied between 6% and 16% of those that cast ballots in 2003 and 2004.

Gore, Bush campaigns dance 'Texas two-step' in California - March 29, 2000
LOS ANGELES (CNN) --Although California and its coveted 54 electoral votes have swung Democratic in the last two presidential elections, the state remains a behemoth in American politics that presumptive Democratic nominee Vice President Al Gore cannot afford to take for granted.
Although Gore holds a 12-point advantage over his Republican rival Texas Gov. George W. Bush in the most recent CNN polls, the governor is already wooing Golden State voters with something of a Texas two-step that promises to keep Democrats on their toes.
At one point in 1999, the Texas governor enjoyed the backing of roughly 30 percent of California's Latino population before that support plummeted to just 18 percent this year, according to the latest California Field Poll.

This paper summarizes the pre-election surveys that were conducted by our three polling organizations prior to the 2002 general election in California-the Field Poll, the Los Angeles Times Poll, and the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) Statewide Survey.
Taking into account variations in methods, low voter turnout, third-party voting, and voters’ ambivalence toward the major party candidates, the pre-election surveys in the 2002 California governor’s election were consistent over time and across polling organizations, and reasonably accurate in predicting the election results.
