Estimates by the California Department of Finance (2005) approximate a city population of 464,727 and a metropolitan area of 1,002,284.
Because it sits at the junction of Highways 41 and 99 (41 is the park's southern access road, and 99 branches east from Interstate 5 to serve the urban centers of the San Joaquin Valley), the city is a major gateway for visitors coming from Los Angeles.
Other highways include the recently-completed California State Highway 168 that leads to the city of Clovis and Huntington Lake, California State Highway 41 that comes into Fresno from the south via Visalia, and California State Highway 180 that comes from the west via Mendota.

The town is on state Highway 168 east of Fresno.
Highway 168 can be picked up by going east bound on either Highway 99 or Highway 41 at the Shaw exits.
For those of you coming from the south valley or Southern California, the best route is to exit off of Highway 99 in Kingsburg and go through the towns of Kingsburg and Sanger via Academy Ave, which will run into Highway 168.

Owens Valley is the arid ranching valley of the Owens River in eastern California in the United States.
The valley is the source of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, a source of drinking water for Los Angeles, and is famous as the scene of one of the fiercest and long-running episodes of the California Water Wars.
As of December 17,2003, LADWP settled a lawsuit brought by California Attorney General Bill Lockyer, the Owens Valley Committee, and the Sierra Club.

This section of highway was named to remind all of us of the need to keep safety a priority and a reminder to cherish every day and enjoy it to the fullest.
On April 5, 1970, four California Highway Patrol Officers were murdered in one of the worst uniformed police officer killing incidents in American history when Officers George Aleyn, Walter Frago, James Pence Jr., and Roger Gore were gunned down just off of Interstate 5.
The tragedy was made worse by the theft of Officer Schumacher's badge from the scene of the accident by a bystander--it being the tradition of the California Highway Patrol since its inception, to memorialize a fallen officer by presenting his or her badge to the officer's family.

California has at least two documented areas with booming dunes, the massive Kelso Dunes of San Bernardino County and the scenic Eureka Dunes of Inyo County.
These are the tallest sand dunes in California and the home of the rare Eureka dune grass (Swallenia alexandrae) that grows no where else in the world.

The Senate's passage of SCR 43 will allow the California Department of Transportation to receive donations from private parties or sponsors to pay for the cost of erecting the appropriate plaques and markers along State Highway 168.

 Highway 168 Motorcycle Ride, Inyo County, California
We turned west on Highway 266 towards Oasis in California, then west at Oasis on Highway 168 towards Big Pine over Westgard Pass.
I'm not sure when the fun started but somewhere between Big Pine and Oasis the road not only got twisty, but for the first time in my life I experienced up and down roller coaster style riding in conjunction with twisties.
It is a great little rip accessible only by looong stretches of straight roads- Highway 395 from south or north and Highway 95 between Las Vegas and Reno.
