  Register of California Historic Landmark Project Collection - MSS 0204
Between 1936 and 1940, the California Department of Parks and Recreation in conjunction with the Federal Writers' Project, a component of the federal Works Progress Administration, produced a series of descriptive historical essays and monographs on a variety of the state's important landmarks, monuments and state parks.
The first series, CALIFORNIA HISTORICAL LANDMARK SERIES, consists of historical essays for approximately 130 of California's registered landmarks that recount events from the Spanish colonial period to the late 1930s.
The essays are arranged according to the number assigned to the landmark.

 Historic California Posts: Sutter's Fort (Including Camp Union)
The work of reconstruction was begun in 1891, with the intention of reconstructing the buildings and restoring the grounds as nearly as possible to their condition and appearance during the heyday of the fort.
It was in 1839 that John Sutter arrived in California, armed with a carpetbag full of letters of introduction and the hint that he was a former captain in the French Army.
The 5th Infantry Regiment California Volunteers, was organized here on 8 October, 1861 and trained by Brevet Brigadier General George W. Bowie for duty in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas against the Confederate forces.

California's first state fair was held on this site on October 4, 1854.
Sponsored by the California State Agricultural Society, the exhibition of "horses, cattle, mules, and other stock, and agricultural, mechanical, and domestic manufacture and productions" promoted the new state's growing agricultural industry.
Plaque placed by State Department of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the Grand Parlor, Native Sons of the Golden West.

As the gold rush of '49 swept California and communities mushroomed overnight, towns were quickly built of wood and in many cases, just as quickly destroyed by fire.
In 1907, second and third stories were added and the building lengthened from 104' to 185' and widened from 34' to 50', to accomodate A. Brizard, one of the largest and oldest general merchandise firms on the northcoast.
On the occasion of the centennial of A. Brizard merchantile operation, in 1963, the original building was designated California State Historic Landmark #783, which calls attention to the two foot thick original stone wall of the building.

Under a sunny Southern California sky, a crowd of more than 300 stood around a curve in the Hawthorne residential neighborhood filled with boxy, two- bedroom, stucco-front houses built 50 years ago.
The beige brick wall bears a plaque that proclaims the site California historic landmark No. 1041 and includes a sculpture depicting band members carrying a surfboard, reminiscent of their 1963 "Surfer Girl" album cover.
