San Quentin State Prison was opened in July 1852, and is the oldest (A correctional institution where persons are confined while on trial or for punishment) prison in California.
San Quentin held both male and female inmates until 1933 when the women's prison at Tehachapi was built.
The state's male (The cellblock in a prison where those condemned to death await execution) death row is located at San Quentin, as well as its only (Instrument of execution consisting of a sealed chamber into which poison gas is introduced; used to kill people or animals) gas chamber.

This study uses a life-calendar methodology to collect detailed information on women’s lives in the three years prior to entering prison in order to contextualize their experiences of violence in their larger life circumstances.
Detailed narratives are also collected about women’s involvement in violence, as victims and/or perpetrators, and their experiences of avoided violence.
A theoretical interest in risk is examined through empirical examinations of local institutional cultures and of criminal justice practitioners engagement with and production of risk information.
