The primary mission of the academy is to provide instruction in the maritime sciences, engineering, and related fields, including all those necessary to provide the highest quality licensed officers for the United States Merchant Marine and California maritime industries.
The president of the academy is also the commander of the academy and has, subject to the regulations of the trustees, the direct control, supervision, and management of the academy, and any other powers and duties as provided by regulations of the trustees.
The Legislature recognizes that the California Maritime Academy's sources of funding are multiple, and approval by the Legislature, and by other public agencies, as to employees funded by those agencies, may be required prior to implementation of increased expenditures resulting from agreements reached in accordance with this chapter.

The California Maritime Academy (also known as CMA, Cal Maritime and CSU, Maritime) is one of 23 campuses in the California State University system and is one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States.
By 1940 the Academy was granting Bachelor of Science degrees and Naval Reserve commissions to its graduates, this marked the beginning of the transition from a trade school to a university.
Today, Cal Maritime is a member of the NAIA and the Men's Soccer, Basketball, Golf and Women's Volleyball teams are charter members of the California Pacific Conference.
