Beginning in 1880, the museum’s collection now displays over 13,000 objects including “mining artifacts, rare specimens of crystalline gold in its many forms, as well as beautiful gem and mineral specimens from California and around the world.” In 1983, the collection was moved to Mariposa from its first home in San Francisco.

Staff at the California State Mining and Mineral Museum (5005 Fairgrounds Dr., Mariposa) announced their newly-upgraded Junior Ranger program activities, which started two weeks ago.
The youngsters must be at least 7 to become Junior Rangers, but the museum does offer an activity, with a mineral prize for younger kids.
The goal of the Junior Ranger program is "to help families connect with the natural, historic and cultural resources making each park special." Personnel hope that this will inspire them to appreciate and care for their parks, as well as for resources in general.
