On November 22, 1960, the California Highway Commission adopted an alignment for Route 84 that generally extends along Isabel Avenue from Vallecitos Road connecting to I-580 in the vicinity of Collier Canyon Road.
Caltrans documentation from 1994 indicates that the unconstructed portion is from Route 580 to Route 4, and from W of Livermore to Route 580, replacing the traversible highway.
It is a four-lane highway with paved shoulders and a median.

 MOUNT SIGNAL, SAND SPIKE ART PROJECT
A sand spike is a local geological oddity (a particular type of sand concretion found at the base of the mountain.) Estimated size: 7 feet x 15 feet.
The model for the large sculpture was chosen from a collection of Sand Spikes at the Imperial Valley Pioneers Museum.
When the three exhibitions are over, the sculpture will be permanently installed on the grounds of the museum, visible from California State Highway 111, to attract passing drivers to stop and visit the area.
