California State Route 144 runs from Route 101 at Milpas Avenue in Santa Barbara, USA to Route 192 through the Sycamore Canyon.
From the circle, Route 144 continues north onto Sycamore Canyon Road, a winding two-lane road between steep hillsides.
In 1999, the state law was changed to permit the relinquishment of Route 144 to the City of Santa Barbara.

On November 22, 1960, the California Highway Commission adopted an alignment for Route 84 that generally extends along Isabel Avenue from Vallecitos Road connecting to I-580 in the vicinity of Collier Canyon Road.
Caltrans documentation from 1994 indicates that the unconstructed portion is from Route 580 to Route 4, and from W of Livermore to Route 580, replacing the traversible highway.
Note that the California Transportation Commission may relinquish the portion of Route 84 within the City of West Sacramento to that city upon terms and conditions that the commission finds to be in the best interests of the state, per SB 104, chaptered 4/21/2003 (Chapter 5).
