State Route 84 is a split-section California State Highway consisting of two sections: an east-west arterial road running from San Gregorio to Menlo Park, across the Dumbarton Bridge through Fremont and ending at I-580 in Livermore.
Route 84 is legally defined to continue from I-580 to Route 4 in Antioch, but there are currently no plans in place to bridge the gap at this time.
Route 84 is part of the Freeway and Expressway System, as stated by section 253.5 of the California State Highway Code.

California 84 starts its journey at the coast near San Gregorio, then crosses the Santa Cruz Mountains as a two-lane road on its way to Redwood City (Interstate 280) and Menlo Park (U.S. The highway then crosses the bay via the multilane Dumbarton Bridge, adn it meets Interstate 880 in Newark.
California 84 resumes as a north-south route, this time heading north along the western banks of the Sacramento River (parallel to California 160) all the way to Sacramento.
