California State Prison, Corcoran is a state penitentiary in California, USA.
It houses almost 5,000 prisoners, although it was designed to hold 3,000.
In March 1997, the CBS News newsmagazine 60 Minutes broke the story of a scandal at Corcoran where the guards were accused of playing "gladiator" games with the prisoners.

Many prisoners had been prescribed methadone for pain, and knowing full well that it too is addictive as much as heroin is and the withdrawal is worse than heroin, it would be better to have prescribed heroin.

A legitimate end to the abuse of prisoners from Corcoran has to include more than a few disciplinary findings, firings or even indictments against a few officers who were involved in a "greet the bus" beating on a single day or a single killing of an arena combatant.

Greenspan noted that the last time a large group of prisoners went on medication strike by refusing to take their HIV medications, was at the California Medical Facility Vacaville in the early 1990s to protest medical neglect and prisoner deaths.

Recent research has come to light which suggests that gladiators were not as savage as once thought and actually adhered to a strict code of discipline and did not resort to savage violence and mutilation which could occur on the battlefields of the day.
Gladiators were typically picked from prisoners of war, slaves, and sentenced criminals.

Under this law, prisoners within six months of death and found to no longer pose a threat to the public safety are eligible for early release from prison.
