California State Route 238 is a north-south highway in the southeastern part of the San Francisco Bay Area.
It formerly contained a segment of east-west freeway now designated as Interstate 238 and, until Interstate 680 was completed in the area and supplanted it completely as a through route, extended to San José, California at its intersection with U.S. Highway 101.
Before California massively renumbered its state highways in 1964, this highway was known as California State Route 9.

Where Route 238 veers off of I-680, between the Durham and Washington exits, where I-680 makes a turn, there is an overpass over the southbound lanes and some pavement suggesting that there might have been an exit from the leftmost northbound lane and an "entrance" to the leftmost southbound lane.
Route 238 was widened from four to six lanes from north of Niles Canyon Road to south of Mowry Avenue in Fremont.
This LRN was used for the future freeway routings of Route 134 between present-day I-5 and I-210, and I-210 between Route 134 and I-10.

This is to inform you that your application for the elimination of Route 180 and extension of Route 580, and the establishment of Route 880 and Route 238 have been approved.
Route 480 (its ghost and all) was finally put to rest in 1991 and deleted from the state highway system, certainly with tears of sorrow from the eyes of Caltrans engineers falling on the order.

These are known as "preferred routes." States may designate alternate routes for radioactive materials shipments using U.S. Department of Transportation guidelines or a similar routing methodology that considers public risk factors and consultation with neighboring states.
Not only would this route trucks through areas of high resident and non-resident population, it would also result in shipments through two of the three highest accident locations in southern Nevada, I-15 in the Las Vegas urban area and US 95 in the southern portion of the state.
State route designation in Nevada is further complicated by a New Mexico Supreme Court decision which made the City of Santa Fe pay damages to a landowner who claimed loss of property values due to state route designation.

There was also the intent to continue the 238 freeway south to I-680 in Fremont, where stub ramps and about 1,000 feet of the Mission Freeway were built in 1971.
The newer 238 to 880 SB ramp overcrosses the 238 entrance from 880 northbound.
I-238 is more amusing than irritating to me, mainly for the reaction it provokes.

 LAKEHEAD Campground and RV Park in Lake Shasta, California
In early California, the area around Lake Shasta was wilderness inhabited by the Wintu Indian tribe as well as an occasional trapper, rancher or gold miner.
This route was used extensively by travelers until 1872 when the railroad was built following the same route.
The modern spelling ("Shasta") did not appear until 1850 when the name was first chosen for "Shasta" County by the California State Legislature.
