It is routed with Interstate 305 and U.S. 50 on western leg and California 51 on eastern leg.
California 480 ran from Interstate 80 at the Bay Bridge on the SF side to the Embacadero area.
California 99 shields were removed because there is a significant break in California 99 between its junction with Routes 50 and 51 at the Oak Park Interchange and where it junctions with Interstate 5 north of Sacramento.

 California Highways (www.cahighways.org): Routes 371 through 480
The portion from I-5 in Orange County to Route 710 was defined in 1951; the portion from Route 710 to Route 90 was defined in 1947; and the portion from Route 90 to I-5 in San Fernando was defined in 1933.
In 1991, the remainder of Route 480, from Route 280 near Harrison Street in San Francisco to the junction of Route 1, Funston approach, and the approach to the Golden Gate Bridge, was deleted per SB 181, Ch 498.
Route 480 was approved as chargeable interstate sometime pre-1965; it was deleted as a chargeable route in August 1965 (hence, its signage after that date with a state shield (Route 480), as opposed to an interstate shield).

 California Route 280
From Route 101 to Routes 880/17, it is called the "Sinclair Freeway", named after Joseph P. Sinclair, the District Engineer for the District 4 Division of Highways (now Caltrans) from 1952 to 1964.
From Routes 880/17 to Route 1 in Daly City, it is called the "Junipero Serra Freeway", named after the founder of the California missions that dot the state.
The entire portion of Route 280 within the City and County of San Francisco is called the "Southern Embarcadero Freeway", since it was to have connected with the original Embarcadero Freeway (Route 480) at its northern end.

The Wadsworth routing is State Route 427, the western Fernley part is known as "Spur U.S. 50A," and the eastern Fernley section (after the U.S. 50A-95A junctions) is U.S. On Interstate 80, the western Fernley exit is signed U.S. 50A East, and the eastern Fernley exit sign shows U.S. 95A South.

Interstate 238 was born in 1984 as a result of California State Assembly Bill 2741, which modified the route numbering for California 17 and Interstate 580 in the state highway system.
Two Interstate x80 designations are not in use currently: the 480 designation (former Embarcadero Freeway in downtown San Francisco), which has been removed from the state system, and the 180 designation, which refers to the long east-west state route through Fresno.
Since California does not duplicate its state routes, Interstate 180 is not available either, even though Interstate 180 briefly emerged in the mid-1980s as the designation for the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge (which is now part of Interstate 580).

In 1965, this route became part of California's interstate system, and the Park Presidio route was withdrawn.
In October 1969, the city asked the state to stop work on the I-280/I-480 connection, over concerns that this would perpetuate the existence of a freeway the city wanted torn down.
The Caltrans mid-1980s "Route Concept Reports" projected a 2005 need for 14-16 lanes for I-280 between Route 85 and I-880; and for 14 lanes for I-880 from US 101 to Route 237.
