One leg is the new route from Route 49/Route 120 to Route 49/Route 108 near Sonora.
Route 49 is a currently signed freeway from approximately 1 mile south of the Route 49/Route 20 interchange near Grass Valley, and runs for a length of 5 miles until reaching the Route 49/Route 20 interchange north of Nevada City.
The portion from Route 20 to Downieville was defined in 1909; the portion from Downieville to Route 89 was defined in 1933.

This freeway's north terminus is at its junction with the Foothill Freeway, I-210, in Glendora (formerly the Glendora Curve interchange).
From the county line, its alignment is straight south to its terminus at its junction with the Santa Ana Freeway, Interstate 5, and the Garden Grove Freeway, State Route 22, in southwestern Orange.
Route 57 from Route 1 to Route 60 is known as the Orange Freeway.

To insure the preservation of the natural environment and assure the visitor of a quality visitor experience, the Department of Parks and Recreation has instituted a Wilderness Permit system; everyone entering the wilderness area for the day or for camping must have a permit in their possession.
Applications for overnight permits will be accepted up to 56 days (8 weeks) in advance; if you apply by mail, send your request in at least 10 days in advance.
The United States Forest Service has a similar permit system in effect for wilderness areas in national forests; these permits are issued at U.S.F.S. Headquarters, P.O. Box 518, Idyllwild, California 92549.

California's State Route 56 is a highway that though started in the 80's, has yet to be completed.
It is supposed connect I-5 with I-15, easing traffic for both, as well as along Miramar Road and Mira Mesa Blvd. The eastern end was completed in 1993 and the western end was completed in 1994, but there is still a 4 mile gap in between.
