California State University, Fullerton is its largest campus in terms of student body population with 35,040 students in the Fall of 2005.
The California State Normal School was itself derived from the City of San Francisco's Minns Evening Normal School, founded in 1857, a normal school that educated San Francisco teachers in association with that city's high school system; the system now considers its founding date to be that of the Minns School.
Responsibility for the California State University is vested in the Board of Trustees, whose members are appointed by the Governor of the State of California.

California State University, Channel Islands (CSUCI) is located in Camarillo, California, in California's Ventura County.
CSUCI opened in 2002 as the twenty third campus in the California State University system, succeeding the Los Angeles County branch campus of CSU Northridge.
The campus is under continuing construction to accommodate the projected growth of the university; while currently there are under 3,000 registered students, projected enrollment for the year 2025 is 15,000 full-time students.

Camarillo State Hospital, which closed in 1997, is being reincarnated as California State University Channel Islands, the 23rd campus in the CSU system and the first full-time, four-year university in Ventura County.
On a Friday afternoon in August, one week before the university's inauguration ceremony, a group of former Camarillo patients journeyed north from Los Angeles to witness the campus' final passage from asylum to potential bastion of higher learning.

California State University Channel Islands is accepting undergraduate applications for the fall 2006 semester.
Last year, the Channel Islands campus remained open to applications from upper division transfer students into the spring semester, but the campus closed to freshman applications at the end of the priority filing period.
While the total number of CSUCI students this academic year is approximately 2,500 students, the University anticipates a total of approximately 3,000 for the 2006-07 academic year.

California State University, Fullerton, which launches fall semester classes Monday, has moved up in the 2004 “America’s Best Colleges” rankings, announced today by U.S. News and World Report.
