California sea slug - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The California sea slug (Aplysia californica), also called the California sea hare, is a species of sea hare which belongs to the class Gastropoda in the phylum Mollusca.
It is a very large sea hare, capable of growing to a recorded length of 75 cm (30 inches) though most are half that size.
Like all sea hares, the California sea hare is hermaphroditic, acting as male and female simultaneously, even during mating.

 sea spider or Pycnogonids
Besides living underwater, sea spiders differ from their land cousins in other ways-- they don't spin webs, and may have from four to six pairs of long segmented legs, versus four pair for land spiders.
Deep-sea researcher Dr. Paul H. Yancey notes large sea spiders are known to "stride over the abyssal mud with their long legs, using a proboscis to suck tissues from sessile prey..." and has photos of two such specimens on his deep sea pages web site.
Like their land-lubber cousins, sea spiders are carnivorous, some feeding on other invertebrates by sucking out the juices, while others tear their prey apart and pass it into a proboscis for feeding.

Zalophus californianus, California Sea Lion at MarineBio.org
Sea lions are large, ranging from around 150 kg to over 1,500 kg, and males tend to be much larger than females (called sexual dimorphism).
Sea lions are known to battle such diseases as pneumonia, caused by a parasitic lungworm, and a bacterial infection called leptospirosis, which affects their livers and kidneys.
California sea lions are very social animals, and groups often rest closely packed together at favored haul-out sites on land, or float together on the ocean's surface in "rafts." They are sometimes seen porpoising too, or jumping out of the water, presumably to speed up their swimming.

 Sea slug research
The research focuses on Aplysia california, a marine animal that grows to approximately eight inches in length and one pound in weight and has a hearty appetite for seaweed.
He not only developed the recipe for slug pasta, but also invented a special tank that allows a living slug to eat, while the MRI machine makes movies, showing the researchers how the slug's muscles work as it gorges itself.
Drushel and Sutton's detailed models of the slug's feeding apparatus, which have been created as part of the NSF grant, have the potential to serve as prototypes for the working designs of flexible grasping devices for such robots.

The accompanying data file is from a pilot study on the ability of sea slug larvae to detect this kind of seaweed at different tide heights.
Instead of randomly swimming until they find this seaweed (as was previously believed), these larvae actually "smell" the seaweed when they are passing over it in the water.
Fifteen slug larvae were then injected into each of the replicates, and the percentage of larvae that metamorphosed was recorded.

His hypothesis ignited an instant debate when it was first revealed upon the publication of his book in 1968: "The Great Orm of Loch Ness." In that text, Holiday claimed that the famed Nessie was a gigantic version of the long extinct, carnivorous invertebrate known as Tullimonstrum gregarium.
According to Holiday, this creature - which is a distant relative of both the octopus and the common garden slug - had grown to immense proportions, and was probably responsible not only for the sightings in Loch Ness, but also for the dragons which had been seen throughout Europe in the Middle Ages.
The events which followed (which are an obscure convolution of alien technology and old world mysticism,) apparently took its toll on Holiday's health and apparently led to his untimely demise at the age of 59.
