Topic: Caliper

Caliper - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The tips of the caliper are adjusted to fit across the points to be measured, the caliper is then removed and the distance read by measuring between the tips with a measuring tool, such as a ruler.
The caliper's opening is then either measured on a separate ruler and then converted to the actual distance, or it is measured directly on a scale drawn on the map.
Vernier calipers can measure internal dimensions (using the uppermost jaws in the picture at right), external dimensions using the pictured lower jaws, and depending on the manufacturer, depth measurements by the use of a probe that is attached to the movable head and slides along the centre of the body.

Wilwood's GM Metric Caliper is a direct replacement for the 1978 and later D154 type GM metric caliper.
The caliper body is a precision casting using a tight grained, high density aircraft alloy.
Each caliper is fully machined, assembled with high temperature seals, and tested in-house by expert Wilwood technicians to assure top quality and peak performance - the kind of quality and performance you expect from Wiwood.

A caliper may be used to center or eccenter a tool string (sometimes also used in the same fashion with cased hole tools); a caliper-like arm may carry sensors or a radioactive sealed source.
Early pulse calipers used several novel schemes to vary the frequency of vacuum tube based oscillators of the time, but most modern pulse calipers simply use a pot actuated by the movable arms to vary the voltage fed to a voltage-to-frequency circuit of some type.
Pulse calipers are immune to variations in line resistance, so may offer advantages in geothermal or deep logging, though it should be noted that Dowell dc calipers have been used to depths of 23,000 feet.

Lehigh University - Designing novel brake caliper
As the fluid presses against the piston, the piston in turn presses in on the brake pads, which press against the brake disc from two sides, creating the friction that stops the wheel.
It is smaller and lighter than a regular caliper, but still capable of withstanding the 1,000 pounds per square inch of pressure imposed on it by the brake master cylinder.
Koerner fabricated the new caliper as part of an independent-study project that consisted of a lab and a design class.

Although the caliper piston is sturdy enough, a torn rubber boot often exposes the piston to dirt and corrosion.
In addition, be sure to install new caliper hardware to prevent the caliper from rattling on rough road surfaces and to prevent the brake pads from clicking during light brake application.
If the caliper has been removed or replaced, it's imperative that new copper washers be installed when the brake hose is re-mounted to prevent air from leaking into the caliper.

The Vernier caliper is an extremely precise measuring instrument; the reading error is 1/20 mm = 0.05 mm.
In the example above, the 3rd tick mark on the sliding scale is in coincidence with the one above it, so the caliper reading is (21.30 ± 0.05) mm.
If two adjacent tick marks on the sliding scale look equally aligned with their counterparts on the fixed scale, then the reading is half way between the two marks.
