 The Influence of African Rhythms
Talk of syncopation, call and response, and timbre can get complex and technical, but on a basic level, they are the soul of this new African American music: they give the music "looseness" and excitement, relaxation and drive.
The alternation between leader and chorus, often called call-and-response, is a defining characteristic of African music and became an important element of African American music.
Call and response is also crucial because it involves the audience; it transcends the seperation of audience and performers so common in the west.

Using Call-and-Response To Facilitate Language Mastery and Literacy Acquisition among African American Students. ERIC ...
She suggests that responses function to affirm or agree with the speaker, urge the speaker on, repeat what the speaker has said, complete the speaker's statement in response to a request from the speaker or in spontaneous talking with the speaker, or indicate extremely powerful affirmation of what the speaker has said.
Responses can follow from a speaker's specifically requesting them or eliciting them by manipulating their own discourse, or they can be unsolicited and spontaneously interjected into the ongoing interaction (Foster, 1989).
Analysis of this excerpt along the four dimensions--code, function, mode, and initiator--reveals that it consisted of a verbal call and a musical response; it expressed speakers' attitudes by celebrating learning (i.e., the student's use of the more sophisticated term injured); it was highly scripted or routinized; and it was initiated by the teacher.

Yet, the most favorable response from the nurses was the discussion of how call lights relate to the core of nursing-providing great clinical care.

In November of 2004, we get to take a step back to experience a time when Call and Response were in between the twee sound of their debut and the matured radiance of their recent full length.

Beluga calls are dense and otherworldly, with more kinds of sounds than any other animal.
Orca calls are thus musically complex in structure and remind some listeners of jazz soloing over chords.

With their debut self-titled album, Call And Response hopped from one label to the next (namely Kindercore and Emperor Norton), and looks like they've hopped one more time for their sophomore effort -- landing them on Badman Records.
On paper, Call and Response don't seem like much: A band that's absorbed the cleaner, quieter side of post-rock (American Analog Set, the Sea and Cake) into their collective bloodstream, plus not one but two female vocalists who might have made serious coin - or at least Chris Douridas' playlist - during trip-hop's heyday.
Listening to Call and Response's second album, Winds Take No Shape, it's hard to believe the band ever had a reputation as bubbly, sunny California popsters.

Northern California pop quintet Call and Response (C.A.R.) employs the warm analog tones of Wurlitzers, Moogs, and Farfisas along with a ton of feathery doop-de-doo harmonies to produce sticky-sweet, lighter-than-air summery pop music.
Like later Free Design records, C.A.R. even spike their bubblicious, kaleidoscopic sound with a little gentle funk, which might occasionally inspire a "Hey, who put that Sly my Air?" for some listeners, but on the whole works very nicely.
The quintet formed in the Bay Area in the late '90s and recorded its first album in 2000 after heading out to Athens to play at a Kindercore music festival.

My big difficulty with that field of study is that there tends to be a presumption that since emotional response can be conditioned for, all emotional response _must_ be conditioned for in some manner.

Call-and-response: parallel "slave narrative" in August Wilson's 'The Piano Lesson.' - African American author African ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The structure of the play, then, is a narrative within a narrative, a literal slave narrative integrated into a metaphorical one, with the latter (Boy Willie's narrative) reflecting both a continuation of and an attempt to bring to fruition the former one (the family's).
In this story, the call consists of the slave narrative that has been carved into the body of the piano; Boy Willie's response is his improvised effort to translate that myth into the reality of his own economic and social emancipation.
But the interaction in The Piano Lesson is instead structured like the classic call-and-response; the two narratives are linear - evolutionary rather than integrated - and so, in the manner of the traditional call-and-response pattern, the direction of the interaction is not toward resolution or even progress, but toward an appropriate response to the call.
