In broadcasting and radio communication, a call sign (also known as a callsign or call letters, or abbreviated as a call) are a unique designation for a transmitting station.
Amateur radio call signs are in the international series and normally consist of a one- or two-character prefix, a number (which sometimes corresponds to a geographic area within the country) and a 1, 2, or 3 character suffix.
Mexican call signs begin with an X. In the United States, the first letter is K for stations west of the Mississippi River and W for those east of the Mississippi.

Call letters are used by television stations to identify themselves to the TV audience.
The first U.S. radio stations were allowed to select their own call letters beginning with either a W or a K. Also, early radio stations could select either a three-letter or a four-letter combination.
The growth of cable has increased the promotional value of call letters since some cable systems re-transmit TV signals "off-channel." For example, a VHF station that broadcasts on channel ten might be carried on cable channel five; a UHF station that broadcasts on channel forty-eight might be carried on channel thirteen.

The call letters assigned to the United States are all combinations (676) beginning with the letter N and all (676) beginning with the letter W, and all combinations (598) from KDA to KZZ, inclusive.
Calls for limited commercial land stations will be allotted by the Bureau of Navigation in a special manner to indicate, if practical, the different radio districts over which such stations usually radiate messages, as well as to identify the stations.
Calls for special classes of stations, such as experiment stations for the development of radio communication, technical and training school stations, and special amateur stations will be allotted by the Bureau of Navigation.
