Call sign - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Call signs in aviation are derived from several different policies, depending on the type of flight operation being conducted, and depending on whether the caller is in an aircraft or at a ground facility.
Amateur radio call signs are in the international series and normally consist of a one- or two-character prefix, a number (which sometimes corresponds to a geographic area within the country), and a 1, 2, or 3 character suffix.
In the Italian call sign, IK1TZO, IK is the prefix, the number component is 1 and corresponds to the Piedmont region, and TZO is the suffix.

ARRLWeb: Amateur Radio Vanity Call Signs
A Vanity call sign is a call sign that the licensee wants assigned to him/her by the FCC for use in place of his/her existing call sign (or for an Amateur Radio club, it is a call sign assigned to replace the existing FCC-assigned club license call sign).
FCC will not reassign a call sign that is presently licensed to an individual or club, unless they receive a request to have the license canceled--or until two years have elapsed since the license may have expired.
Some Vanity call sign holders use this same mechanism to obtain a Vanity call sign that they consider even more desirable than their current Vanity call or former call sign (choices like a call sign that includes their initials is common).

A nation's call sign allocations are also used for its territories and possessions, no matter how remote from the nation (for example, call signs in Guam use the U.S. allocations despite being distant from the landmass of the United States).
Call sign prefixes are not an infallible way to determine a station's location, however.
The different nations that authorize or license radio stations are assigned, by international agreement, a set of unique call sign prefixes to help identify where a station is located and under which national authority the station is operating.
