Call and response (music) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In music, a call and response is a succession of two distinct phrases usually played by different musicians, where the second phrase is heard as a direct commentary on or response to the first.
In West African cultures, call and response is a pervasive pattern of democratic participation -- in public gatherings in the discussion of civic affairs, in religious rituals, as well as in vocal and instrumental musical expression.
Where call and response is most apparent in the secular music arena is in traditional and electric blues, where the most common 12-bar form is an AA'B pattern where the AA' is the call (repeated once with slight variation), and B is the response.

Call to the bar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Being called to the bar has its origin in the royal summons that was issued to one seen fit to serve in the royal court at the monarch's pleasure.
In common law Canadian provinces, despite the legal profession being a fused one (i.e., lawyers are qualified as both barristers and solicitors), the certificate issued by the provincial Law Society to the newly-qualified lawyer generally indicates he or she having been called to the Bar and admitted as a solicitor.
In the Canadian province of Ontario, there are in fact two certificates issued by the provincial Law Society: one for call to the bar, and the other for admission as a solicitor.

Generally admission to the bar requires that the candidate graduate from an accredited law school, be certified as morally fit to practice, and pass a state-administered bar examination which may consist of several parts.
In many states of the U.S., admission to the bar of a state does not entitle the admitted attorney to appear and plead before the appellate courts of the state.

Whether you want to become a solicitor or barrister, until the rules regarding Call to the Bar change in 2008 (when Call to the Bar will be deferred until after pupillage), I suspect that the most convenient way of qualifying as a lawyer may be to undertake the BVC first.
It is true that getting pupillage is ridicously difficult, but one of the remaining advantages of being Called to the Bar is that if you want to cross-qualify and become a solicitor, then all you need to evidence is two years' legal work experience.
If you are not sure of your course, then given the uncertainty and expense the Bar necesitates you may well be better advised to pursue a career as a solicitor in an area such as crime which will allow you advocacy opportunites.
