Callao, an 8226 gross ton freighter, was built at Stettin, Germany, in 1913-1914 as the S.S. Sierra Cordoba.
Placed in commission at that time as USS Callao (ID # 4036), she transported World War I veterans and other personnel back to the U.S. from France, making two voyages for this purpose from late June to early September 1919.
USS Callao was decommissioned later in September and returned to the Shipping Board.
